Braham Mayor Nate George said his final “State of the City” address was a particularly meaningful event for him.
“This is my final State of the City address as mayor of Braham,” he said at the event, which was held at the Braham Event Center on Thursday, June 18. “Serving this community has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
“Tonight is not simply a report on projects completed or budgets balanced. It is an opportunity to reflect on a journey that we’ve taken together.”
George called the journey a “revival,” because he feels Braham is in a stronger position than it was when he took office. He cited three reasons for the step forward, one of which was increased transparency through live-stream meetings, town halls and surveys, and expanded ways for citizens to communicate with city staff.
“These may seem like simple changes, but they represented something much bigger: They represented a commitment to openness, a commitment to listening, a commitment to solving problems right now,” he said. “Instead of kicking the can down the road, we made a commitment to accountability, a commitment to ensuring that City Hall belongs to the people it serves.”
George touted the city’s improved financial position through responsible budgeting as well as addressing issues rather than allowing them to fester.
“The results speak for themselves: For three consecutive years, the city of Braham has received strong audit reports and finished with budget surpluses,” he said. “Our financial position got better and better each year. And each year, we demonstrated that fiscal responsibility and meaningful investment can coexist.”
